Becoming an Au Pair

An au pair is a domestic assistant from a foreign country working for, and living as part of, a host family. Typically, au pairs take on a share of the family’s responsibility for childcare as well as some housework, and receive a small monetary allowance for personal use. I’ve recently had the opportunity to agree to be an Au pair in France for next year. I begin in September and stay for a year, if not more.

I am extremely excited and nervous! I’ve never been out of the country and this opportunity is very exhilarating. I’m going to have a busy summer learning France, and doing all the necessary things you need to do in order to become an Au pair.

While thinking about leaving my friends and family behind in America, I plan to find who I am as a person and develop a new sense of culture and self awareness. There is so much more to the world then the college you attend, the friends you have and the daily routines that you develop. I’m excited to start something new and to experience a completely new adventure.

  1. I will be an au pair this summer in France as well. I share the same feelings as you. I’m so excited and nervous at the same time. I definitely agree with you, this will be a great opportunity to step put of the comfort zone and embrace another culture. Wishing you the best of luck 🙂
